Idiots guide to getting SPI working?

The subject says it all. I've unpacked my new board and want to get SPI working. But I don't see any of the /dev/spidev devices I would expect to see. If someone can walk me through the basics of enabling SPI I'd appreciate it.

In the default image, the one which came inside the board, there is not active SPI support. You must download the trunk, activate Spi modules with “menuconfig” and recompile, then you can flash the new image or upload the kmod-spi-dev as a module. After this you can see /dev/spidev0.0 after that you can start coding. A little bit of work, good lock.
