Hi there,
for a customer i have the task to build a hardware firewall into his Computer. (old rich man, doesn't know what a computer virus is.) i used the following items:
1x USB to Ethernet adapter 1x 2xUSB-A to USB-10PIN header adapter 2x short (20cm) lan cables 1x USB-A to USB-Mini cable 1x Carambola 2 dev board 1x RJ45 to RJ45 couppling 1x Slot bracket
the RJ45 couppling was glued (i know, lack of alternatives) to the slot bracked so i had a network port on the outside of the case. from there a short lan cable is directly connected to the carambolas wan port. the lan side is connected via another short lan cable in the usb to ethernet adapter and then connected to the onboard USB Header. Console and power are solved via the USB-A to USB-Mini cable and also plugged into the onboard USB header.
in the pc bios i set the USB-Ports to always be powered even if the computer is turned off. this way i have a perfect remote access solution. currently using Wake-on-Lan but i try to use the carambola gpios for reset and power switching in the future.
software used was: privoxy clamav iptables luci is turned off dropbear (ssh) is facing the wan side. no other ports open either to client or wan side. (except dns) all proxying and filtering is done with intercepting iptables rules.
if anyone is interrested i can attach some photos afterwards.
Regards, J
