Hi, has anybody disabled serial console on Carambola 2 and used serial port for connecting external devices?

I thought also about bitbanging serial port over gpio pins, but see that there is no gpio serial driver for bitbanging. Then I found this interesting article and which explains how it is possible to use SPI pins as serial port:

I have disabled console in /etc/inittab as explained above but still cannot write to it

echo -n "Hello" > /dev/ttyS0

ash: write error: Input/output error

Is there anyone who has succesfully used ttyS0 for command output?

To put things under different perspective:

If I'm communicating over ttyS0 using text commands, I do not actually need to open serial device - I just need to print my things on console (and read from it).
How do other binaries manage to write to the console?
