Can anyone please provide some guidance as to how to getting the Carambola to support these latest Gen LTE Modems. Really amazing performance on my laptop for speed and latency. Great for VoIP. I basically want to use the unit as a WiFi HotSpot. I get a lot of conflicting information as to what needs to be done at the Kernel level. OpenWRT forums couldn't help me too much either. My research indicates that maximum performance only comes by using "DirectIP" mode and that some routers don't have the horsepower to support this? Does the Carambola have the performance required to effectively utilize such high bandwidth? Performance wise the Carambola already handles a 150MBit/s Wifi connection, I think it'll handle LTE as well. |

Thanks, good point! I guess that's a fair conclusion to draw. The reason I asked the question is that on other forums it was mentioned that other routers running same Ralink SOC wont do justice to LTE speeds. |

Well there's of course the possibility that the LTE protocol/connection needs a lot of processing overhead (for encryption or whatever) which the modems don't handle themselves. But just doing the math on the bandwith seems to indicate that it'll be working. There's also the possibility that on those other routers the USB bus isn't good enough for high speed USB (i.e. bad board layout). From the informations I could gather from a quick google search, DirectIP mode seems to talk to the LTE modem as if it were a NIC (think USB to LAN adaptor) rather than a modem. Well, I'd just try out both ways to use it (PPP & DirectIP) and see which one gives you a better performance. Either way there should be enough bandwidth available for your VoIP idea (which is already possible using a normal 3g modem). |
