 Periodic high pings on Wifi

I have the rambutan development kit configured to bridge a wifi AP and the two wired LAN ports together. When there is little or no traffic on the wifi I get very periodic high ping times. Roughly every 10s or so I will get pings >1000ms. Sometimes several in a row. I have not tested for this problem in other configurations.

This problem goes away once I get some traffic going. For example if I run "iperf -c (rambutan IP address) -u -b 1M -t 1000" from a wifi connected client device the pings are perfectly stable.

Is there some low power mode, etc that could be to blame for this issue? What can be done to fix it?
