We are pleased to announce that our Wi-Fi SOMs are now RED 3.3 compliant*. This is the result of an extensive in-lab security testing process that has helped certify our compliance with this updated EU security directive. More information about our self-declaration of conformity is available further down below.
RED 3.3 refers to Article 3.3 of the EU’s Radio Equipment Directive. This article outlines a range of cybersecurity and privacy requirements for radio connectivity equipment destined for EU markets. We’ve described the technical requirements of this directive in greater detail elsewhere on our blog, but some of the directive’s key elements include:
- Radio equipment must be capable of regulating its own function to prevent it from harming network functionality;
- Radio equipment must protect user data, including via encryption;
- Radio equipment must be secure from unauthorized modification.
Our products have largely been compliant with these and other requirements outlined by RED 3.3, but that compliance has now been documented. Each Wi-Fi module has its own self-declaration of conformity available both on its Wiki page and on the corresponding product page on the 8devices website.
RED 3.3 compliance also involves the development and deployment of compliant software as well. Our proprietary software products are already compliant, but any of our clients developing solutions using OpenWrt on 8devices products will need to make a few changes in order to use our self-declaration certificates. Please contact us for more information on how to access these modifications for your platform free of charge.
